Styles of Truck Bed Covers

When choosing a bed cover, the first thing to decide is whether you want a soft or a hard cover. Let me explain. A soft cover does a good job of protecting your cargo from weather and will keep an honest person honest. Unfortunately, all someone needs to access your bed is a pocketknife or razor blade because the cover is made of vinyl.

The downside of this cover is flexibility. It is hard to access the bed from the side as it hinges up behind the cab. Should you ever need to use the whole bed, taking the cover off and on is a two-person job. Then you need to find a place to store it.

Folding Models

In more-recent years, folding bed covers have become available. They combine much of the security and weather resistance of one-piece models, but are a lot easier to use. The cover has three panels for most trucks. You can open one panel to access your bed, open the second panel or open all three. You can even flip the panels up against the rear window, giving you full bed access and no need to remove the cover. As you can imagine, this style is very popular.

Retractable Bed Covers

More and more people every year move to the retractable style of bed covers. They are extremely easy to use, look classy when installed, and are secure and weather-resistant. They come in two different styles.

The first style rolls up on top of the bed toward the cab and can be cinched into place should you need full bed access. The second style uses a canister that mounts under the top of the bed that the cover retracts into, along the lines of a rolltop desk.
