A client from here in Salina recently contacted the team at Nu Image Audio about upgrading the sound system in 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck. He wanted a subwoofer system that would sound great at high volume levels and look cool. After talking to the client about how he listens to his music and getting a sense of the available space in the vehicle, we designed a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer upgrade that would deliver the performance he wanted. He loved the plan and gave us the go-ahead to schedule the installation.
Custom Dodge Ram Subwoofer Enclosure
The project started with our fabrication team creating a fiberglass enclosure in the storage area under the rear seat of the truck. After masking off the area with plastic and heavy-duty masking tape, we built up a thick foundation of resin-impregnated fiberglass to serve as the bottom of the enclosure.
Subwoofer System Customization
The next step was to create the top of the enclosure. We cut a piece of ¾-inch MDF to serve as the top of the enclosure and mounting surface for a pair of 12-inch Rockford Fosgate P3D4-12 dual voice coil Punch-Series subwoofers.
We glued a piece of vinyl to the top of the enclosure and applied a vinyl Dodge Ram logo to it, using that as a template to cut the vinyl out and leave a raised surface in the shape of the Ram’s head. Once that was ready, we added a nice contour to the edge of the panel and wrapped the whole thing in a gray vinyl that matches the seat covers. The Ram logo is now embossed in the center of the enclosure for a little extra style. We finished by installing the 12-inch subwoofers and added a set of grilles to protect the cones from damage when someone sits on the rear seat.
Big Power for Great Sound!
The subwoofer system is powered by a 1,200-watt Rockford Fosgate Prime Series R1200-1D monoblock amplifier. We mounted the amplifier on the back wall of the truck and connected it to the battery using 4-AWG Stinger power cables. Once up and running, we set the crossover and level control so that the subs would blend nicely with the rest of the speakers in the audio system.
Work/Hunting Truck Audio Upgrade
The client returned to Nu Image Audio after a couple of days to check out the subwoofer system in his Dodge Ram. He loved the way it looked and was blown away by the new sound.
